Of Darkness and Storminess

Last week I stumbled upon a great new blog called San Diego Mommy, also home of PROMPTuesday. So here I go and be prompted (us San Diego mommies have to stick together, ya know):

It was a dark and stormy night. The day had started with bright sunshine burning off the morning fog, but a cold front had blown in across the bay as the day progressed. Sitting by the fire, sipping warm tea, Fiona watched the rain fall outside her window. Secretly she hoped the weather got worse and turned to snow. The first snow of the new year. Freshly fallen snow was like an eraser on the earth. Everything became fresh, new, and clean. If only snow worked on souls, she thought, everyone should get a second chance to make things right. She spied the lightening just before she heard the thunderous clap. The room went dark, except for the glow from the fireplace embers.

When she awoke later, she had no idea how long she had been asleep. The silence from outside was instantly noticeable. She peered into the dark and saw moonlight reflecting from the newly fallen blanket of snow. The yard was covered and the snow unbroken, except for the foot prints up to her front door. She ran to porch and quickly opened the door, but there was no one there. As she closed the door slowly, she saw the envelope on the mat. She opened the card and read the words, barely breathing. “I was wrong. You are the one. I will be back.”
