Why I Probably Shouldn’t Have Friends

It’s seems so simple and so obvious: (and yes the title is said with extreme sarcasm, you can hear that right?)

Because they are human. And we all know what that means, right? It means that no matter how caring, sweet, helpful, wonderful, giving, supportive and (you fill in here what makes your BFF be your BFF) they are also human. That’s the stickler right there, isn’t it? Humanity is fallible. Imperfect. Flawed.

Get it? They make mistakes. They make errors. They judge each other. They jump to conclusions. They lie. They tell stories. They’re too nice. They are rude. They are needy. They are unforgiving. They forgive to easily. They overreact. They ignore. They are docile. They are hostile. They need support when you want to be alone. They want to be alone when you need support. They get their feelings hurt. They hurt your feelings. They are not smart enough. They are too smart. They are touchy-feely. They are remote and distant.  They have opinions. They have ideas. They are different.

For every single positive thing a friend is or does, there is the possibility that tomorrow that very same friend may be someone or do something I don’t like. It’s a relationship. They take work. I take work. And often there are rewards. And often there are disappointments.

It’s perception. It’s personal. It’s INDIVIDUAL. There are no generalities, only individuals. That’s how it works. Not a single one of us is perfect. It’s just not possible.

And, really, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Would you?
